Jim Jordan continues battle for chairmanship of the US House of Representatives | Abroad

UPDATERepublican Jim Jordan still wants to try to become speaker of the US House of Representatives in a third round of voting. Earlier on Thursday, he had informed party members that he was withdrawing his candidacy. He then said he agreed with the plan to temporarily give acting chairman Patrick McHenry more powers.

But it seems that supporters have convinced him to give his candidacy another chance. After a meeting with other Republicans, Jordan said he will continue his fight for the presidency. “I am still running for president and I intend to get enough votes and win this race,” he told the press.

Since Kevin McCarthy was voted out, Republicans have been unable to find a successor for him. A small group of Republican hardliners and a larger group of more moderate Republicans cannot agree on a joint candidate. This means that no votes can be taken on, for example, support measures for Israel or Ukraine.

In two rounds of voting, Jordan failed to gain sufficient support. Never before in American history has the House been without a speaker for so long.

The plan to temporarily put Republican McHenry at the helm can therefore count on increasing support. The Democrats may also agree. It prevents a scenario in which the House is left without a leader for even longer and is therefore unable to make important decisions. But Jordan is not giving in yet.

In the coming weeks, the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Congress, will probably have to approve new aid for both Ukraine and Israel. And in less than a month, the US government is once again out of money. Then the House will play an important role in raising the debt ceiling.

Earlier, Republican John Scalise briefly made a bid for the chairmanship of the House, but he too could not find sufficient support among his fellow party members. It is not yet clear whether Jordan will permanently withdraw or want to make another attempt later.
