Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, 2022 Oscar nominees

Penelope Cruzfor ‘Parallel Mothers’, and Javier Bardemfor ‘Being the Ricardos’, have obtained two Oscar nominations in the categories of best actress and best actor in a leading role. The double candidacy constitutes an absolute milestone for Spanish cinema, since never before have there been Spanish performers nominated in both categories in the same year.

This is the fourth Oscar nomination for both Cruz and Bardem. The Madrid interpreter won the statuette for best supporting actress in 2009 for ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ and was among the finalists for ‘Volver’ (2007) and ‘Nine’ (2010). On this occasion, her rivals will be Jessica Chastain (‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’), Olivia Colman (‘The Lost Daughter’), Nicole Kidman (‘Being the Ricardos’) and Kristen Stewart (‘Spencer’).

Bardem, meanwhile, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for his role in ‘No country for old men’ and earned nominations for ‘Before Night Falls’ (2001) and ‘Biutiful’ (2010). This time Benedict Cumberbatch (‘The Power of the Dog’), Andrew Garfield (‘Tick Tick… Boom’), Will Smith (‘The Williams Method’) and Denzel Washington (‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’) will be measured.
