Javelin throwing legend Klaus Wolfermann spoke out in favor of the Olympic Games in Germany. “You could now consider that again,” said the 1972 Olympic champion to “SID”: “Olympic facilities would actually be here with a sustainability of 50 years, that would just be a dream.”
However, such an application also means “an incredible amount of work: internally, in the community and in society,” said Wolfermann. He caused a minor sensation in Munich 50 years ago when he won gold two centimeters ahead of the favored Janis Lusis.
Wolfermann, who is now 76, was disappointed about the failed application for the 2022 Winter Games in Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen as part of the 2013 referendum.
Above all, he criticized the timing of the vote. “In terms of content, it wasn’t mature at all, people had a rather negative attitude, and the political nature wasn’t entirely perfect for it either,” Wolfermann said: “That’s a very, very sad thing.”
