Animator Jasper Kuipers from Breda still regrets it. On Friday, the animation film Knor, on which he worked for three years, won a Golden Calf for Best Film. It was the first time that an animated film received this award. That’s why Jasper hadn’t counted on the win and was sitting at home on the couch.

With a proud smile on his face, Jasper looks again at the presentation of the Golden Calves. On TV, just like Friday night. “Super cool and bizarre. I still find it very strange to see it again.”

“I would have loved to have been there.”

As one of the animators of the film, he was, of course, invited to the gala. But because he had just moved house and didn’t really expect Knor to win prizes, he decided to stay home. “I was sitting here on the couch. Very drowsy. I did regret it when I saw my colleagues jumping and cheering on TV. I would have loved to have been there.”

Jasper worked on the stop-motion film for three years. “As an animator, you move the figures day in and day out and take pictures of them. Move a little again and take a picture. Then move a little more and take a picture. That way we build the movement completely from scratch and we act with the puppets.”

Knor won two more prizes in addition to Best Film. Mascha Halberstadt was awarded the statuettes for Best Production Design and Best Direction.

“We really like the characters too.”

Although the Best Picture award came unexpectedly, Jasper does have an idea why Knor is so loved. “I think the strength is that everyone was really looking forward to it and really enjoyed making the film. The whole team put a lot of love into it. I hear from people that you can see that reflected in it. detail has been thought of and we really like the characters too. I think you feel that when you watch the film.”

Jasper will start a new project next week, the movie Fox and Hare. “We are going to make a film based on the children’s books. It will be a computer animation, no puppets this time. I am working again with the director of Knor.”

When asked whether this will yield another Golden Calf, he crosses his fingers in the air. “I hope so and I’m curious!”
