An expert analyzes the situation of Finland’s best female sprint skier.
Jasmi Joensuu won the overall World Cup sprint competition last season. He was once in the top three in the individual sprint during the mc season. PASI LEISMA
He is the overall winner of the World Cup sprint, but he is not generally considered to be among the top three sprint skiers in the world.
Is it Jasmi Joensuu29, a chance general of one season or a skier who gets on the podium more than once in a mc season?
– Last season showed that he has opportunities for anything. Jasmi is allowed to expect podium positions in the World Cup, answers the 2001 sprint skiing world champion, who works as Iltalehti’s skiing expert Pirjo Muranen.
After his university studies, Joensuu returned to his home country from the United States for the 2019–20 season. From that season began a personal trainer Kalmer Tram according to the words “professional training”.
The development has been progressive and from each basic training season, the Vantaa Ski Club woman has entered the competition season as a stronger athlete than before.
It will be quite interesting to see what the training season 2025 has spawned.
– You can’t say that Jasmi started doing things from scratch at the end of the last decade. He had a good foundation in the background. The development that has taken place since returning to Finland has required training to be refined in the right direction, Muranen says.
In a snap

The expert says that Joensuu is “a click away” from the absolute top of his sport.
Physically, “snap” means that the athlete would tolerate the acid in the sprint stage better than before – Jonna Sundling, Linn Svahnin and like partners. Joensuu is strong in the sprint time trial and in the quarterfinals, but sometimes too strong an acid attack has ruined the podium seams in the final.
– Hopefully, during the summer, the focus has been on the pace of the basic training, especially on the variation of pace, and anaerobic exercises. With that comes good oxygenation to, for example, the blood vessels of the hair.
It has been estimated that the Finn’s tactical eye for the game is sometimes inaccurate.
– I have also paid attention to the fact that he easily misses good places. Especially when I’m tired, the thought has sprung up.
Iltalehti’s previous ski expert Reijo Jylhä has mentioned that the Finns’ collective challenge in sprint event skiing is tactical competence.
Jylhä took the helm of the women’s A national team for this season.
– For example, at the Val Senales camp, the Finns did descent and corner training as a group. They develop. For example, in my career of Magnar Dalen there were similar exercises during the head coaching season, Jylhä’s ex-protege Muranen says.
– It’s simple that you learn by practicing in a group. There will be tactical choices to be made and tolerance, the expert adds.
Third in Muonio
Joensuun started its new competition season on Friday in Muonio. In the traditional sprint of the Olos cannon games, he was third, 0.44 seconds behind the winner Germany About Laura Gimmler. A year ago, Joensuu won the corresponding award before Gimmler.
– At least Jasmin had to be in the final so that you can go towards Ruka with a good mood.
The World Cup starts in Koillismaa in two weeks.
The Olos cannon competitions have a bit of the sound of a training competition.
– For me, it was tuning up my body for the competition season, but I participated with full competitive spirit. I always skied in Olos on my best skis, says Muranen.
