Japan is shrinking at a record pace: 3.1 million fewer inhabitants in five years

Japan’s population fell by 2.5 percent over the past five years, the steepest decline since the country began censuses in 1920. The main causes for this are the aging population in the country and the declining birth rate. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the pace of population decline is particularly worrying.
