Jannik Sinner surprisingly loses his second round match at the French Open. He then suggests that the heat is not the only reason for his problems.

World number one Jannik Sinner surprisingly left the French Open in Paris in the second round. Plagued by cramps and dizziness, the Italian lost to Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo. With 33 degrees in the shade, the heat was believed to be the main reason for his failure. The superstar contradicted this.

“I played great until the middle of the third set, then I couldn’t get out of the set because my body wasn’t cooperating anymore. That’s sport,” Sinner said at the press conference after the match. The Italian continued: “I felt dizzy, I had little energy. I didn’t feel well when I woke up this morning.”

Because of the problems, he tried to keep the rallies as short as possible. But Sinner didn’t want to blame his elimination on the weather. “It was warm, but not crazy warm,” he emphasized. “It had nothing to do with the heat. It was OK to play. A lot of things brought this about.”

From my own experience: Boris Becker expresses his suspicions

Sinner led 5-1 in the third set on Court Philippe Chatrier. Then he suddenly lost his rhythm. The world number one limped, massaged his left leg and leaned exhausted against the boards after a rally. When the score was 5:4 and 0:40, he requested a medical time-out – at that point he had lost 15 points in a row. He told a physical therapist he felt dizzy. He told the referee that he felt dehydrated and was vomiting. After 3:36 hours the result was clear: 6:3, 6:2, 5:7, 1:6, 1:6 for Cerundolo.

Tennis idol Boris Becker had already commented before the game: “We redheads have a hard time in the heat. The weather is our biggest opponent.” After Sinner’s exit, Becker was also enthusiastic about Alexander Zverev’s development: “The creativity, the stop, the way – I like that incredibly much. For me, he is currently the best Sascha Zverev.”
