Janneke Ensing also closes skating career: ‘It’s good like this’

“I ended my cycling career in October in the Ronde van Drenthe. And I also think it’s great to finish my skating career at my home track in Groningen,” she responds. Her farewell match goes without great emotions. “I don’t think I got everything out of my skating career, sometimes that stings, but it’s okay.”

Since 2007 in A-peloton

In 2007 she rode her first marathon race in the A-peloton. She won a total of twelve competitions on artificial ice: the last time in 2017. Last weekend, at the Utrecht marathon, she surprised one more time by finishing second.

“I thought that was nice. It is a pity that we have not often ridden with a complete team this season. I would have liked to teach the young skaters something. But that did not happen and that is why it is good that the finished now I enjoyed riding with Arianna Pruisscher, who came second in the Dutch championship.

Stage

The marathon in Groningen was won by Paulien Verhaar after a tumultuous bunch sprint. Several skaters fell in that sprint. Maaike Verweij from Veenhuizen came in second. Iris van der Stelt finished in third place.

Ensing in the rear

Janneke Ensing said goodbye with the 41st place. “I couldn’t do much. It was a very fast race. After the Dutch Championships I have only been on the ice twice because of my work. I still have the condition, but I lack speed.”

Dietitian Jumbo Visma

Incidentally, the 35-year-old skater has moved to Edam, where she recently moved in with her boyfriend. She is also a dietician for the Jumbo-Visma cycling team. She prepares meals at training camps and at matches for men such as Roglic and Van Aert.

“Because both my boyfriend and I travel a lot for our work, it’s handy that we live close to Schiphol. But I’ll be back to Drenthe again. We’ll have to talk about that for a while.”
