Jake Reiner, son of Rob and Michele Reiner, has described the “living nightmare” he has been living since his parents died in December in an emotional essay he posted on Substack on Friday. “Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents at the same time and in one fell swoop,” he wrote. “It’s too devastating to comprehend.” It is the most detailed statement he has made since the arrest of his younger brother Nick, who was charged with first-degree murder. because he is said to have stabbed the filmmaker and his wife.

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most brutal way imaginable,” he wrote. “Of course, losing a parent is always devastating – but nothing compares to losing both at the same time and knowing that your brother is at the center of it all. It’s almost impossible to process.”

“I understand that people have questions about what happened back then,” he continued. “Some of these answers will come with time. But some things belong to our families alone, and keeping them to ourselves is the only way to protect what little we have left from something that was taken from us.”

Loving words for parents

The bulk of Reiner’s essay, however, consists of loving tributes: to Michele, whom he describes as compassionate and secretly funny, and to his father, who he says was as warm and kind off-camera as the actor and director the public knew. He remembers going to Broadway and baseball games. And he writes how grateful he was to his family for their support when he announced he wanted to change his career from journalism to acting.

At its core, however, Reiner’s essay is about grief. He describes the immediate shock when his sister Romy told him that both parents had died. (Romy, he wrote, will tell the story herself when she feels ready.) And the immediate pain that his parents will no longer see him marry, hold a future child, and see what he will achieve in his chosen career. “It breaks my heart and infuriates me at the same time,” he wrote.

He also gave an answer to all those who have come to him since the Reiners’ deaths and said they didn’t know what to say. “The truth is: there is nothing to say,” he wrote. “I ask only for love and compassion – the same principles my parents lived by.”

Upcoming birthday as a trigger

In an Instagram post, he explained that he would soon be turning 35 – hinting that his upcoming birthday had prompted him to open up. “I’ve learned a lot about grief in the last four months. I want to [dem Autor David Kessler, Gründer von Grief.com] “Thank you, who was an invaluable support to me in coping with this cruel time, as well as to my family and friends,” he wrote.

In December, Jake and Romy released a joint statement on the death of their parents. “Words cannot begin to describe the unimaginable pain we feel every moment of the day,” it said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something no one should have to experience. They weren’t just our parents – they were our best friends.” In March, the Oscars honored the Reiners’ legacy with a moving tribute that featured numerous actors and actresses who worked with Rob.

In February, Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty. A preliminary examination is scheduled for Wednesday.
