Prosecutors also demand that the prime suspect, known by his nickname ‘Janker’, pay a fine of €8,000 and be barred from holding public office or participating in elections for the next five years. A second suspect was told the same demands, in addition to a 50-month prison sentence. The remaining 16 suspects were sentenced to between 18 and 30 months in prison.
Thirty hours of humiliation
Dia died of multiple organ failure after thirty hours of humiliation and suffering, such as drinking fish oil and having to sit in a well dug himself. The eighteen involved are suspected of accidental killing, degrading treatment and the intentional administration of harmful substances resulting in death.
The first day of the trial took place on Friday. A number of lawyers for the suspects asked at the beginning of the hearing to hold the trial behind closed doors, but the court did not agree.
