Almost five centuries old, but completely contemporary. Jacqueline lives with her family in a monumental mansion in the heart of Geertruidenberg. “The high ceilings, vaults and well give the house character,” says Jacqueline, who is saying goodbye to the house.
The house at Brandestraat 30 combines comfort with history. The so-called soldiers’ house is a special part of that history. “Soldiers used to stay here who had room and board,” says Jacqueline. “Now it is our daughter’s own place, with a living room downstairs, a bedroom upstairs and even a small bathroom.”
Soul of the house
The sixteenth-century building has been fully adapted to today’s requirements and is for sale for 1,275,000 euros kk. The house offers 268 square meters of living space, five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sunny south-west facing garden. It also has energy label A, underfloor heating and a modern kitchen.

Yet the soul of the house has been preserved. “Although it is almost five centuries old, it feels modern and luxurious,” says Jacqueline. “The vaulted cellar has its own entrance on the outside. Now I use it as a studio. Sometimes I also give workshops there. People can go down the outside stairs without having to walk through the house. That is so nice.”
Magical view
The living room and kitchen are family favorites. “It is a house where you really live together. On summer days we sit in the garden, with a view of the tower of St. Gertrude’s Church that rises above the old city. Especially when the sun shines, it is truly magical.”

Jacqueline also calls the carillon a typical feature of the location. “People sometimes ask if the sound doesn’t drive us crazy. At a certain point you just don’t hear it anymore. Until new melodies sound again, such as at Sinterklaas, Christmas or Carnival. The carillon is part of the charm of this house and of Geertruidenberg.”
Best Italian in Brabant
After years of living in the mansion with great pleasure, a new phase is beginning. “We bought a house in Spain, where we spend a lot of time. As a result, this house has become too big for the time we will still be here. We will really miss the atmosphere, the high ceilings and the vaults. And of course we will also miss the best Italian in Brabant, just across the street.”
