Do you remember the ghost bridge in Varsenare? Built in 1976 for the connection between the E40 and the port of Zeebrugge, which never materialized. After demolition in early 2012, this area, Kwetshage, was returned to nature. 90 hectares in size, and the final part of the compensation of 400 hectares for the inner port of Zeebrugge. But this is also a flood area, and that function had to be preserved.
Hiking trail
At Jabbeke’s request, the swamp is opened to the public through a walking path that runs around the area. But the birds in particular should benefit from this. And that works wonderfully. Endangered species such as the bittern and the marsh harrier have already found their way to Kwetshage.
The cost of the project is 2.5 million euros. There are guided walks on Sundays to introduce the public to the walking path and the newly designed nature reserve.
