Fortuna Düsseldorf scored three important points in the bottom of the 2nd league table. 1. FC Magdeburg continued its winning streak in Braunschweig.

Successful start to the year for Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 2nd Bundesliga: The Rhinelanders were able to celebrate a 1-0 win (0-0) in front of their home crowd against newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld on Friday evening. Cedric Itten scored the goal of the day in the 86th minute. This means that coach Markus Beginn’s team moves up to 15th place in the table. Bielefeld falls back to relegation place 16.

At the same time, 1. FC Magdeburg also collected three important points in the bottom of the table. The FCM celebrated a 3-0 away win (1-0) against direct rivals Eintracht Braunschweig. Mateusz Żukowski (41st), Baris Atik (79th) and Maximilian Breunig (90th) contributed the goals. Magdeburg has now been unbeaten in five games and has won four of these games. Petrik Sander’s team is now 13th, Braunschweig is two places behind.

The hosts, who had lost the first leg 1:5 after leading 1-0, started the game well and had a very good chance through their striker Itten in the 7th minute, but the Swiss headed the ball just over the goal. The East Westphalians played well and stressed the Fortuna defense more often, but without creating any dangerous scenes in front of the goal.

Düsseldorf also had this in the second half, especially through Anouar El Azzouzi (47th/57th). Marius Wörl missed the best opportunity for Bielefeld (64th). With his seventh goal of the season, Itten redeemed the hosts in the final phase.

Żukowski could have given Magdeburg the lead in the first minute, but Eintracht keeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann was there in time. After a long, uneventful first half, in which Braunschweig had no offensive ideas at all and was disappointing, the score was 1-0. Żukowski scored after Hoffmann had previously blocked a shot from Atik.
