The app was previously not available for minors. However, Itsme notices that there are several situations where they could also use the app. This concerns, for example, administration for a holiday job, registration for the driving test or registration for higher education.
The app is already well established among adult Belgians: more than 6.5 million Belgians – or 4 in 5 adults – use Itsme to register with their bank, telecom company or a government service, among others.
The broadening of the target audience was preceded by a technical and legal review. The young people can now create an account via their bank if they have recently had their eID card read in a bank branch. Creating the account via the electronic identity card is technically not possible because the signature certificate for registration is only activated from the age of 18.
Itsme is an initiative of several Belgian banks and telecom operators. The application allows login to various websites.
