On Monday (20 March 2023), the Guinness World Records named The Weeknd the “most popular artist” in the world. To do this, the company analyzed countless Spotify data, including the number of monthly listeners on the streaming platform. The result couldn’t be clearer: The Canadian musician, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, had 100 million monthly listeners at the end of February – more than anyone before.

According to the Guinness World Records report, his listenership continued to grow in the weeks that followed. His monthly listenership currently stands at 111,927,744 – well ahead of other people on the list of most listened to artists. Miley Cyrus currently ranks second with 82.6 million monthly listeners, followed by Shakira (81.8 million), Ariana Grande (81.6 million), Taylor Swift (80.5 million), Rihanna (78 million) and Ed Sheeran (77.5 million). According to this, there are another 29 million listeners between first and second place on the list!

The Weeknd recently released a remix of his song “Die For You” with a feature by Ariana Grande, as well as a live album entitled LIVE AT SOFI STADIUM. His last studio album DAWN FM was released in 2022. In February of the same year, the 33-year-old performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. The musician is currently also trying out the film business – he created the series “The Idol” together with “Euphoria” showrunner Sam Levinson and also plays the leading role alongside Lily-Rose Depp. The series is slated to premiere in the US later this year.
