It’s clear in the DFB Cup: Bayern’s B-Elf doesn’t give Viktoria Köln a chance

After all, the dream of a surprise in the first round of the DFB Cup lasted 34 minutes and 30 seconds for Viktoria’s Cologne footballer. Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch then missed a pass from the right in the penalty area and shot into the left corner to make it 1-0 (35′).

A little later, another new signing in the starting XI of the record cup winners, Mathys Tel, made it 2-0 with similar mobility and quick feet with a shot from the left half of the penalty area into the far corner (45′).

Sadio Mané (53′), Jamal Musiala (67′) and Leon Goretzka (82′) turned the result for FC Bayern into a 5-0 final score in the second half, which corresponded to the difference between the two teams. In the sold-out Müngersdorfer Stadion, the favorite did not stumble.

Very short Victoria cheers

Third division team Viktoria did quite well in front of a large crowd at the beginning. Against a – if there is such a thing – Bayern-B-Elf with players like Gravenberch, Tel, Mazraoui or Stanisic in the starting XI, coach Olaf Janßen’s team cheekily looked for the way forward when they won the ball. And after a one-two, the people of Cologne also cheered briefly when Simon Handle put the ball in the Bayern goal guarded by Sven Ulreich (20′). But a legitimate offside whistle ended that part of the dream as well.

On the other hand, Viktoria’s defense initially held out against the flexible offensive game of the guests – as long as the Munich pass machine was not yet in full swing. Viktoria goalkeeper Ben Voll also gave the impression that he could grow into a cup hero with saves against Tel (19th) and twice Joshua Kimmich (29th, 34th). “We did an excellent job and was close to our optimum,” said coach Janssen, summing up the initial phase from Viktoria’s point of view on the sports show microphone.

Great little dance with Musiala

But Gravenberch’s elegant goal straightened things out in one fell swoop. Too fast, too flexible, too much class – FC Bayern dominated the game from then on. When Jamal Musiala made it 4-0, the Munich side danced their way through six stations in a confined space with short passes into the penalty area and in front of the goal, where the Bayern youngster confidently shot into the right corner.

Bayern are of course in the pot for the draw for the second round on Sunday and apart from the small drop-out in the 1-1 draw in the Bundesliga against Borussia, the starting balance with five wins and 26 goals in six competitive games is impressive. And Viktoria Köln can already look forward to not having suffered the worst defeat of the season against the German football powerhouse.

Bayern to the top game in Berlin

FC Bayern continue on Saturday (September 3rd, 2022) in the Bundesliga with the top game against second-placed Union Berlin. A day later, Viktoria Köln is a guest in the 3rd division at FSV Zwickau.
