RRome, May 15th. (askanews) – Greenpeace remembers Monica Montefalcone, the 51-year-old, professor in Ecology at the University of Genoa, who disappeared in the Maldives during a dive with four other Italians, Giorgia Sommacal, her daughter, Muriel Oddenino, Federico Gualtieri and Giorgio Benedetti. In the video released by the environmental association, of which she was a collaborator for the Mare Caldo project on the effects of the climate crisis in the Mediterranean and for the AMPower project on the expansion of Italian marine protected areas, the woman is seen on a boat and while diving.

Italians who died in the Maldives, Greenpeace remembers Monica Montefalcone

“This tragedy has affected us deeply. We want to express our deepest condolences to Monica Montefalcone’s family – commented Greenpeace Italia – a highly professional researcher, she was also a person of rare generosity and enthusiasm. She did not hesitate for an instant to accept the collaboration with Greenpeace, always ready to put herself on the front line for the protection of the sea. Monica will forever be a rainbow warrior”.

«Thank you for all the discussions about the sea, the laughter, the advice»

“I thank Monica for all the dives, the interviews, the discussions on the sea and the laughter. Her teachings were precious, as was her contribution to Greenpeace projects. We will miss her professionalism and her advice immensely. I want to remember her with the braid on one side, sitting on the dinghy while smiling before going down. Hi Monica” said Valentina Di Miccoli of the Greenpeace Italia Sea campaign.

And Giorgia Monti, former manager of the Sea campaign for Greenpeace Italy, added: “Monica was an incredible person as well as a dear friend. With her we founded the Mare Caldo project, involving a large network of marine protected areas in just a few years. I shared many study and diving missions with her. I want to remember her with that special light she had in her eyes when she spoke about the wonders of the sea and the importance of protecting them”.
