The man had left a mountain hut with two companions at about 5 am to climb the 4,148 meter high Grand Combin. The group was not accompanied by a mountain guide, the cantonal police clarified in a statement.
After the fall, the injured man was taken to hospital. There he died around noon. The Public Prosecution Service has opened an investigation.
