Lighthouse ‘The Horse of Marken’

Thijs and Liliane Spijker live next to the lighthouse on Marken and enjoy the silence they experience on New Year’s Eve. “It’s great, fantastic. There’s no one there,” Liliane responds. “We live far from the village. The road here is a cycle path, and people don’t go to a lighthouse in the middle of the night.”

The couple has the pleasures of the beautiful fireworks, but not the burdens. “We see fireworks all around us, but only hear them in the distance,” says Liliane. Their dog Pebbels also thinks that’s fine. “He doesn’t budge. Friends have sometimes come to us with their dogs on New Year’s Eve for some peace and quiet.”

Unfortunately, the couple doesn’t expect to go up tonight. “Have you seen the weather forecast? Then you understand why we’re not going to the lighthouse.” If you’re thinking: ‘It seems like something to me’, then unfortunately we have to disappoint you. The lighthouse is not open to the public.

There is also a gate around it that is locked. “That is necessary because people are so brazen to just walk in,” says Liliane, and she warns: “There are also fines!”
