In a recent interview with the organization magazine of Finnilco Ry, the organization for patients with stoma and anal incontinence, Finland’s Eurovision representative Käärijä, real name Jere Pöyhönen, talks about the phase of his life where he thought he was going to die.
When Pöyhösen was in middle school, he was diagnosed with an inflammation of the rectum and eventually also of the colon. The situation was treated with medication, but the symptoms worsened.
In 2014, Pöyhönen weighed only 49 kilos and was in poor condition and ran into walls. Soon the artist had to have an emergency operation, where he had a stoma. This frightened Pöyhö, who had just come of age. He thinks in the interview that the fear was caused by ignorance.

Young Pöyhö was especially worried about what was happening to his sexuality.
– It was a really tough place. I thought about how the stoma would affect my life and Me as a person. What do I look like, what happens to sexuality. Things like that were scary, the artist recalls to the organization’s magazine.
18-year-old Pöyhönen was in a relationship at the time of the stoma surgery. The artist says in the interview that things related to sexuality were difficult at first.
– It was a pretty cool place. Otherwise, you’re just trying things out, and then there’s the stoma.
However, Pöyhönen had made a decision. If your partner doesn’t accept Pöyhönen’s state of health or stoma, he is not worthy of you.
