Swiss-Egyptian Islamologist Tariq Ramadan has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in France for the rape of three women. Ramadan committed the crimes between 2009 and 2016 in Lyon and Paris.
He was not present in court. Once he has served his sentence, he will no longer be allowed to enter France. The 63-year-old Ramadan has always denied the accusations.
In 2024, the Islam expert was found guilty in Switzerland of the rape and sexual abuse of a woman. He was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which were conditional.
According to his lawyers, he was unable to attend the case in Paris because he was hospitalized in Geneva with MS complaints. But according to court-appointed experts, his condition was good enough to attend the trial.
Tariq Ramadan is a well-known and controversial scientist. He taught for many years at the University of Oxford. From 2006 to 2009 he was professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He also worked as an integration advisor at the municipality of Rotterdam. In 2009 he was fired there because he made TV programs for a pro-Iranian television channel in London.
