Sand as a rule you are sensitive to every peak of popularity, you will certainly have heard about it Widow’s Bay, series of Apple TV (concluded) which, especially on American soil, has occupied every space of conversation. Streamed weekly, the last episode was released on June 17th, Bay everyone is predicting a large haul of nominations for the next Emmys (in fact, there is talk of at least 13 nominations). But what struck you about this story? Without a doubt the mix of two very attractive genres, i.e. horror and comedytreated without thought or aim. Indeed, in a very understandable and well-structured way in also designing a nice community under siege. Many fans, therefore, including the enthusiasm of a director specializing in the dark.

Widow’s Bay on Apple TV is it really the best series out there? Meanwhile, the plot

This director is Guillermo Del Toro. «In my opinion – said Del Toro – Widow’s Bay it could very well be the best series on streaming. Without a doubt one of the most hypnotic acts of narrative prestidigitation in the horror genre.” How can you blame him? Created by Katie Dippold and executive producer and director Hiro Muraithe series it’s a tasty one hybrid that, while taking more than one inspiration from works such as The Fog by John Carpenter or the sagas slasher by Halloween or Friday 13th, It has its own pleasant originality.

Widow’s Bay is the name of an island off the coast of New England. Stopped in time, it has the charm of a curse. According to ancient records Richard Warren, the founder of the island, he would have made an evil pact with the devil, condemning all past and future inhabitants to an unhappy life, without ever being able to leave the island. Between apple pie, no cell phones, old ladies and picturesque inns, the island it soon turns out to be a nightmare in which characters from pirate films, horror b movies, and shady figures from the mind of Stephen King mix together.

An atmosphere therefore very far from Twin Peaksto which some have compared the series. But there is in fact more distance than similarity between the two. Widow’s Bay plays with fears and superstitions without pretensions to introspective depth. While the brilliant mix of irony and cinematic fragments creates a never banal citationism.

All this is enough to make Widow’s an irresistible product? Without passing it off as a masterpiece, the series impresses with its pleasant and credible immersion in the geographical and mental perimeter of a place and its eccentric community. Starting with the new mayor Tom (Matthew Rhys), a 50-year-old widower with a teenage son who, just when he would like to relaunch the island as a tourist destination, finds himself fighting the undead. And the thousand doubts that assail the population in turn: does the ancient curse really exist or is it all a figment of their minds? Do folklore come to life or are they projections to place external blame on one’s fears and unhappiness?

Widow’s Bayplot episodes of the series on Apple TV

TO Widow’s Bay the electricity grid is obsolete, the internet connection is practically non-existent and the houses have never been renovated. The islanders’ rhythm of life adheres to the time of nature and the tides. Of course they oppose it to Mayor Tom and his goal of making the island a place for overtourism. Moreover, despite being originally from Baylived in New York for a long time.

If the eccentric assistant Patricia (Kate O’Flynn) and the collaborators Ruth (Katherine Callan) and Rosemary (Dale Dickey) often drive him crazy, The his fiercest antagonist is Wick (Stephen Root), historical memory of the island. He is the one who boycotts everything new because he is convinced that the legends about the island’s curse are real.

At first Tom doesn’t give much weight to this news which he considers just stupid superstitions but some disturbing circumstances put his skepticism to the test.. Is the curse real or is it all the result of suggestions?

Matthew Rhys and the Trolley Dilemma (best part of the series)

After becoming very popular with The Americans and, in part, with The Beast in me, Matthew Rhys faces a character endowed with great humor and courage, capable of scenes of real slapstick comedy. His talent is evident especially in the long two-way scene with Katherin Callan (Ruth), the final scene of the trolley dilemma. A seemingly innocent topic, which seems as light as a riddle and yet is the moral heart of the story as well as the best part of the series (Spoiler Alert!).

Tom asks her to imagine that she is on top of an out-of-control tram. He’s about to run over 5 people but, by operating a lever, it is possible to divert it towards a track where there is only one person. “What would you do?”. «Would you do it to save the 5? Because I would.” It matters little that Ruth has a different opinion. “No. I do not. You can’t control the bad things in life but if I pull that lever, that’s a choice: I’m choosing to kill that person. And I can’t do it.” A penalty that makes Tom’s ethical choice even more painful, as he is there to sacrifice Ruth’s life to save the inhabitants of the island.

An all-female cast

The rest of the cast is also impressive, especially the female one. The most interesting exploit is that of Kate O’Flynn, with an introverted character who due to his oddities is snubbed by the women of the island. It is no coincidence that his desire for community and the suffering of rejection coincide with one of the most successful film quotes, that of Carrie – Satan’s gaze. With a crown on his head and in the midst of so much fire he wins the very long, absurd and hypnotic chase of the psychopathic murderer very similar to Michael Myers in Halloween.

Dale Dickey (Rosemary) it is instead real comic talent. An incorrect soul even in the most dramatic moments. His climactic scene it’s the one where he reveals that one of Warren’s descendants is still alive. His disconcerting and impassive way of unraveling the members of the family tree, a long and aseptic list of violent deaths, abortions, horns and homosexuality, It’s from an anthology.
