The fantasy adventure with animatronics came to German cinemas in 1986. Now things could continue soon.
According to insiders, “Journey into the Labyrinth” with David Bowie is set to receive a new reboot. Robert Eggers is being discussed as a director.
Solid contract between Sony and Robert Eggers?
After many years of speculation as to whether “Journey into the Labyrinth” should be remade or receive a sequel, there now seem to be more concrete plans for the project. “The InSneider” reports that Eggers has already signed a contract with Sony Pictures. The Icelandic screenwriter and artist Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, better known as Sjón, is also said to be working on it.
Lisa Henson is said to be on board as producer; at her side as in Egger’s “Nosferatu” Chris Columbus. According to “The InSneider”, Alexander Skarsgård is likely to play the role of the Goblin King Jareth. However, these plans have not been officially confirmed by any of the people allegedly involved or by Sony.
Plans for a “Journey into the Labyrinth” sequel have failed several times
There have been various reports about a second part of the “Journey into the Labyrinth” universe since 2016. At this point, “Guardians Of The Galaxy” author Nicole Perlman was considered to be co-responsible for the project. The following year, in 2017, Fede Alvarez was mentioned as director, according to NME. However, he left the film project in 2020.
Finally, Scott Derrickson was supposed to take over the directing role. The then leading actress Jennifer Connelly was also supposed to return to the set and be seen again as Sarah. However, given the new rumors surrounding the film adaptation, it seems unclear whether Connelly could still be scheduled for a sequel or a reboot.
That’s what the film with Bowie is about
“Journey into the Labyrinth” came to the big screen in 1986 and is about 15-year-old babysitter Sarah, who has to save her little half-brother Toby from a goblin maze. Otherwise, the Goblin King Jareth, played by David Bowie, would turn her sibling into a goblin. The film was directed by “Muppets” creator Jim Henson. George Lucas was also involved in the production.
