Is it more economical to heat electrically? Expert clarifies | VTM News

“I thought I’d look into a radiator that runs on electricity. The electricity is free for the time being thanks to my solar panels”, reacts Eric Pompen, one of the customers in a do-it-yourself store. Whether such a radiator is more interesting than heating with gas? “Of course, because those prices are going through the roof.”

“Electric additional heating will not reduce your gas bill”, counters energy expert Pieter Vingerhoets. “Usually, the electricity price is determined by gas-fired power stations and it is more efficient and cheaper to heat directly with gas than with electricity from the gas-fired power stations.”

And what about petroleum? “Heating with petroleum may seem cheaper, but it can also be problematic in terms of health and safety, partly due to the increased CO2 emissions.”
