Unlucky at Schalke
Ex-Eintracht keeper only replacement: What’s next for him?

At Eintracht Braunschweig, Ron-Thorben Hoffmann was the undisputed number one. At Schalke he is left out. Is it going to end there soon?
At Eintracht Braunschweig, goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann was undisputed. He played 46 games for BTSV between 2022 and 2024 and, as number one, was an absolute guarantee of staying in the 2nd Bundesliga. Then he moved to FC Schalke 04. He joined the proud Revier club with the clear goal of being a regular goalkeeper there too.
It was supposed to be the next step in his career, but so far it hasn’t been anything more than a major disappointment for the 25-year-old. He has already lost the battle for the regular spot between the posts of the S04 goal twice. Under former coach Karel Geraerts, he was demoted to number two shortly after the start of the season.
When he had to resign in September due to continued failure, there was new hope for Hoffmann. Because his successor Kees van Wonderen called for an open duel between the ex-Eintracht goalkeeper and competitor Justin Heekeren. Hoffmann got two chances in the league, conceded five goals – and had to admit defeat again.
Since the beginning of November, his only place left has been on the bench. Coach van Wonderen spoke clearly in favor of Heekeren. “Of course I’m disappointed,” Hoffmann then wrote dejectedly on Instagram. “I came here with a plan to help the team on the pitch because I wanted to take the next step with this great club. That was and is currently being denied to me. I work very focused and motivated every day!”
The prospects for the goalkeeper remain bleak. He belongs to the category of “lost hope” at Schalke, says Dirk Große Schlarmann, Schalke reporter for “Sky”.
Will people flee Gelsenkirchen again in the winter after only six months? The goalkeeper is anything but satisfied with his situation. He himself wants to leave, it goes on to say. And: According to Sky, Schalke shouldn’t put any obstacles in his way if an opportunity arises.
The options are being examined and inquiries should already be received. However, it is clear to the 25-year-old that he will continue to behave in a “highly professional manner” for the time being. The goalkeeper’s contract with S04 runs until 2027. But it is becoming increasingly likely that he will not fulfill it.
