When Victor Boniface was introduced as a new signing at Werder Bremen on Deadline Day, the beefy attacker was the most valuable footballer in the club’s history with a market value of 40 million euros. People on the Weser were looking forward to a star striker who had proven his class in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Four months and zero goals later, Boniface is only the fifth most valuable professional in the current Werder squad – there is a risk of an early return to Leverkusen.

According to the “Deichstube”, the Werder doctors advised Boniface to have an operation on his damaged knee – as did the Leverkusen medical team. This intervention would probably mean the end of the season. According to reports, people on the Weser expect a decision to be made this year.

If an intervention occurs, the loan, which runs until June 30, 2026, could be canceled in the winter. If the Nigerian decides against it, his sore knee will likely have little impact on his influence on the Bremen game. In his eleven appearances he was in the starting line-up twice and prepared two goals as a substitute.

Werder’s zero-goal storm: Boniface and Topp come away empty-handed

At Werder, Boniface’s form and market value curve went downwards: In October, his market value was halved to 20 million euros, and most recently it was devalued to 12 million euros. What caused great joy in Bremen on September 1st as the transfer hammer of Deadline Day could end up as a disappointment for Boniface, Werder and Bayer in January. The center forward, who was directly involved in 44 goals in 61 games, is under contract in Leverkusen until 2028.

At Werder he was supposed to find his old form, but instead both Boniface and his center forward colleague Keke Topp failed completely in their main task – scoring goals. Regardless of the loading problems of their nines, Werder ended the year in 10th place in the table with the ninth most valuable squad in the Bundesliga.
