The 29-year-old Schouten beamed, shortly after her last stage win against the Italian Francesca Lollobrigida, silver winner. “When I lay in bed this afternoon, I just wished it would be evening. Of course I was very tense, but I also thought that was a nice challenge. I’m glad I was able to to trade.”

Schouten and Lollobrigida pushed each other to the limit. “I stayed close to her, but so did she to me. After I finished and saw 1 and 2 behind our names, I knew we both had a really good ride. My goal was to become Olympic champion, I achieved that, but of course I also want to do it in the 5 kilometers, team pursuit and mass start. But I know I’m in good shape. In any case, I have started well”, laughed the brand new Olympic champion.

The 3 kilometers turned out to be a disappointment for Antoinette de Jong, the world champion finished eighth. Defending champion Carlijn Achtereekte finished seventh in the standings.
