Third World Cup participation in a row
Iran has 19 points after seven games. South Korea is second with 17 points. The United Arab Emirates are third – eligible for intercontinental playoffs – with nine points. With three games left, they can no longer match the 19 points of the Iranians.
FC Porto’s Mehdi Taremi scored the acclaimed goal for the home win against Iraq in the 48th minute in front of around 10,000 spectators at the Azadi Stadium. It will be Iran’s third World Cup appearance in a row.
