THEThe time of registered letters in the letterbox and queues at the post office is coming to an end. The dialogue between the state and citizens officially moves into the palm of a hand: the Revenue Agency has in fact decided that, for the three-year period 2026-2028, the Io appthe public services application, will be the main channel for talking to taxpayers, digitally managing sensitive issues that they concern the portfolio and tax regularity.
iO and Tax App, from deadlines to compliance letters
The most important news concerns the so-called “compliance” letters. The term may be scary, but it actually indicates a invitation to “collaboration”: these are communications with which the taxman indicates that something does not add up in your tax return. But instead of immediately sending a fine, the Agency warns that there is an irregularity and asks to check. Receiving this message on your smartphone, as worrying as it may be, also brings an advantage: allows you to correct the error immediately, paying very small fines compared to those of an actual assessment. The iO App therefore becomes a sort of “alarm clock” that warns before the situation becomes irremediable.
A Revenue Office always in your pocket
The functions of the application have become many. Already today, millions of Italians receive alerts on over thirty different types of operations. Here’s what you can see appear in the notifications:
- tax reminder: notices on the deadlines for the 730 or the tax return form
- refunds and payments: communications on the arrival of a refund or the need to register the Iban to receive the money;
- rentals and family: notifications if a rental contract is registered in your name or if the tax code is assigned to a child;
- delegations: alerts if the accountant accesses your data or if the delegation is about to expire.
The application is enriched with new features that allow you to better manage the relationship with the tax authorities. (Getty)
The advantages for security and your wallet
When talking about the Revenue Agency, however, it is not immediately automatic to be positive, but by removing some prejudices, this change can be good news. First of all for safety. Unfortunately, email scams are very common: fake messages from the Revenue Agency trying to steal bank data. The notifications on the Io app are safe and certified: If the message is there, it’s true. Furthermore, there is a question of convenience. From the application, in fact, it is possible to pay any amounts due directly with one click and archive the receipt in digital format, swithout the risk of losing important pieces of paper among the household documents.
iO App, what you need to pay attention to
Despite the advantages, this digital revolution requires a little more attention. The main risk, in fact, it is the so-called “overload”: if you receive too many notificationsit can happen ignore the really important one. It is essential, therefore, not to limit yourself to reading the preview of the message that appears on the screen, but open the application and enter your tax drawer to read the full document.
Advice: don’t pay in the dark anyway
Another aspect not to be underestimated is time. When you receive a digital notification, in fact, the deadlines for appealing or contesting a request begin to pass almost immediatelyso it’s better to move in time. In short, the iO App on the smartphone simplifies our life, but it asks us to be a little more attentive and punctual citizens. However, one piece of advice remains very important: never pay “in the dark”especially if the message concerns important figures or complex situations. In these cases it is always better to consult a professional before proceeding.
