Mou, Spalletti and Conte lasted two seasons and then left; Stramaccioni, Mazzarri and Mancini (in his second experience at the Pinetina) arrived at one and… a piece. The current blue coach from 2004 to 2008 was the last to start the third season
– MILAN
When this afternoon he sits down in the conference room of the Viale della Liberazione headquarters to respond together with the CEO. Beppe Marotta to journalists’ questions and then when tomorrow morning he steps on the grass in the Pinetina fields again giving the official start to the 2023-24 competitive season, Simone Inzaghi will cross a finish line that no one at Inter has been able to reach for 15 years.
TWO YEARS THEN GOODBYE
—
The Piacenza coach will begin his third consecutive season at the helm of Inter, a result that has not been achieved, for example, by treble winner José Mourinho, Luciano Spalletti and Antonio Conte. The Portuguese, despite the contract until 2012, decided to leave the club a handful of minutes after lifting the Champions League in Madrid on May 22, 2010, and Real paid him the 10 million release clause for him. Luciano Spalletti was sacked after two consecutive qualifications for the Champions League despite the two-year contract he had: to take a step forward and win again, Antonio Conte was needed, convinced by the CEO. Beppe Marotta to marry the Nerazzurri cause after the triumphal experience he had together with Juventus. The Lecce coach completed his mission in two seasons by celebrating the Scudetto, but did not go beyond the accomplices of some misunderstandings with the management and the reduction of expenses imposed by the Zhang family. Stramaccioni, Mazzarri and Mancini (in his second Inter adventure) lasted even less, let’s say a whole season and… a little bit. Then for different reasons the farewell. A few months on the Nerazzurri bench for Benitez, Leonardo, De Boer and Pioli; even a handful of weeks for Gasperini and the Vecchi ferry. The Inter bench is worn out and Inzaghi should be considered a real… highlander.
four trophies and the champions…
—
Simone is still in his place due to the results he has achieved: it’s true, he let slip the 2021-22 championship, which ended up on the Milan shirt, and in fact he never entered the race for the 2022-23 one, won in triumphant manner from Naples, but otherwise he bordered on perfection. He won the Coppa Italia twice (beating Juventus and then Fiorentina in the final) and the Supercoppa Italiana twice (beating Juve first and then Milan). For two seasons in a row he achieved qualification for the round of 16 of the Champions League, a feat that before his advent Ranieri had managed in 2011-12 (not Spalletti and Conte…), but he went even further seeing that in June he failed to lift the fourth European Cup-Champions League in the club’s history in the final loss to Manchester City in Istanbul. Inzaghi has given Inter a European dimension back and, even if his contract expiring on 30 June 2024 has not been renewed for the moment, he is considered by President Zhang a fixed point of the project. The frictions with the management during last autumn-early spring are part of the past thanks to the ride in the Champions League and the triumph in the Italian Cup. Simone today begins his third adventure on the Nerazzurri bench: the last one to succeed was Mancini, who remained from 2004 to 2008 before being sacked. In that period Mancio won two championships on the field and one at the table. Inzaghi is still looking for the first. He will try as hard as he can this year. Better if with Lukaku, the first request for him to the club in the post-ko meeting against City, at the center of the attack.
