Investigations into suspected match-fixing in the Regionalliga Südwest

FSV Frankfurt against TSV Steinbach

The Regionalliga Südwest has confirmed investigations into suspected manipulation of the game between FSV Frankfurt and TSV Steinbach Haiger (0:3). The league is “in discussions with both clubs, and they have declared their full willingness to cooperate in clarifying the matter,” it said in a statement on Saturday. “An independent special investigator” should be appointed.

The legal and sports court investigations run parallel. The Federal Ministry of the Interior received indications of possible manipulation from a betting provider, as a ministry spokesman confirmed to the “German Press Agency” upon request. In Hesse, the State Criminal Police Office confirmed “knowledge of the matter, which is being processed at the Frankfurt police headquarters for reasons of jurisdiction.”

According to the “Kicker”, conspicuous amounts are said to have been bet on a Steinbacher lead at half-time. Both the timing and the amount of stakes did not correspond to the usual pattern for regional league games. Steinbach Haiger led 2-0 against Frankfurt at halftime in the game on October 7th after goals from Christopher Theisen (15th) and Arif Güclü (36th).

Those responsible for both clubs were surprised by the reports. “I was there at the game and there was nothing unusual,” said Arne Wohlfarth, managing director of TSV, to “dpa” before the league’s announcement. The Frankfurt team also announced that they had no evidence of manipulation in this game. The Regionalliga Südwest wrote: “For reasons of due diligence, the two clubs were not informed about the incident in the first step.” The case was filed with the state authorities and an internal investigation process was initiated together with the service provider.
