The trading association Intersport Deutschland eG has joined the global network for corporate sustainability, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). In this context, the association is publishing a progress report for the first time that documents the most important milestones, objectives and measures in the areas of environmental, social and responsible corporate governance (ESG) for the 2023/2024 financial year.

For the first time, a comprehensive inventory of all greenhouse gas emissions along the value chain was created; a first step towards creating next CO2 reduction plans. The emissions from the Intersport headquarters in Heilbronn (Scope 1 & 2) as well as all other indirect emissions along the upstream and downstream value chain (Scope 3) were recorded in accordance with the standards of the GHG protocol.

Responsibility through implementing ESG goals

Last year, a solar system was installed at the headquarters in Heilbronn on over 20,000 square meters of roof area in order to achieve long-term energy self-sufficiency in conjunction with the existing combined heat and power plant. Currently around 50 percent of the energy requirement is covered by renewable energy sources. The group is investing a total of over 10 million euros in photovoltaics and building efficiency.

In the social area, the company focuses on “equal opportunities, individual development and an open corporate culture,” says Alexander von Preen, CEO of Intersport Deutschland eG. He explains that employees benefit from modern working conditions such as flexible working hours, mobile work, above-average vacation entitlement and comprehensive additional benefits.

Intersport Deutschland is a member of Amfori BSCI “to ensure fair working conditions and human rights along the supply chain. A structured code of conduct, supplier audits and a whistleblower system ensure transparency and reliability throughout the entire group of companies,” says the company.

“As the largest sports retailer in Germany, we take responsibility and, with the implementation of our ESG goals, we will also strengthen our basis for responsible growth with a view to the future – economically, ecologically and socially.” By joining, the company undertakes to regularly report on its progress in the areas of environmental, social and corporate governance.
