After Japan, China and Dubai, a special work of art comes to Assen. The work consists of many thousands of shiny stones, all of which are placed in a large pattern. And that pattern is different for every exhibition.

Elongated mirrors with colored stones on it, shiny mandala-like constructions and artistic, twinkling diamonds in geometric shapes. At the moment you hardly know where to look in the fourteen -meter -long exhibition hall of Kunstpodium Campis in Assen. Artist Suzan Drummen is carefully busy with a team of enthusiasts working on the floor of the space.

“It’s terribly laborious,” says Drummen. “It is actually very stupid. I could better make a painting. But I make something that is intangible. It’s just when you see it and then it’s gone.”

This art form is somewhat reminiscent of the popular hobby Diamond Paintingwhere small, colored stones are placed in a pattern. Together they then form a kind of painting. But this is much bigger.

Drumming: “You can say that. I think Diamond Painting Not slightly inferior. But I hope I can lift it to a different level. Because of the scale I hope it is a different experience. “

All thousands of stones are laid by hand. Drumming gets help from art students and volunteers. They are working a full week to build the installation. Sunday is the official opening at 12 noon. From then on the exhibition can be viewed for free.

Although the stones are loose on the floor, visitors can also walk through the artwork. “You have to look very carefully where you are walking,” says Drummen.

Yet, according to the artist, it is necessary to experience it this way: “I would like people to look very closely. That they no longer think of other things. That they are really in the moment themselves.”
