Time-restricted eating shows promising effects on the cognitive performance of older adults. New research findings from Rutgers University presented at the NUTRITION 2026 conference support this claim.
Pilot Study with 47 Women
Researchers led by Sue Shapses studied 47 overweight women aged between 50 and 79. Over six months, one group reduced their daily calorie intake by 500 calories and limited their eating to between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The last meal had to be eaten at least four hours before bedtime. Meanwhile, the control group spread the same calorie amount over more than twelve hours.
Both groups lost about seven kilograms. However, cognitive tests revealed significant differences: The intermittent fasting group performed markedly better in spatial planning and problem-solving tasks. They also committed fewer errors in memory-related tasks.
The Timing Matters More than Weight Loss
Since both groups experienced similar weight loss, the researchers hypothesize an independent effect of meal timing. “Cognitive improvements cannot be solely attributed to weight loss,” emphasizes the team, which includes scientists from King’s College London.

A second study from Rutgers evaluated 160 African American seniors living in social housing. Two-thirds exhibited above-average memory loss, with nearly half suffering from dementia. The data suggested that time-restricted eating could slow down cognitive decline.
These projects received funding from the Hearst Foundations ($100,000) and Eli Lilly (approximately $587,000).
Emerging Concerns
Experts caution against jumping to conclusions. The studies are small-scale and have yet to undergo complete peer review. Future research must clarify the biological mechanisms and examine whether these findings apply to larger populations. Nevertheless, these insights provide a foundation for discussions about preventive dietary strategies, emphasizing that not just what we eat, but also when we eat could be crucial for maintaining cognitive health.
