War of words at the World Cup
Intense dispute between two darts stars
December 31, 2024 – 1:44 p.mReading time: 1 min.

The quarter-finals at the World Cup in Alexandra Palace will be a meeting of the big darts stars. Two of them are already arguing in advance.
The verbal skirmishes are now starting on the way to the final of the Darts World Cup. In focus: The two top stars Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright. The Scot Wright had praised van Gerwen’s quarter-final opponent Callan Rydz to the skies – and made him the favorite in the duel and for the title. Of course, van Gerwen didn’t let that sit for long.
“Yeah, Peter Wright,” the three-time world champion from the Netherlands said at a press conference and rolled his eyes. “Every year at the World Cup he talks so much nonsense. He’s allowed to talk nonsense all the time. Nobody takes him seriously on the tour anymore because he’s not allowed to act like that there.”
What exactly does Michael ven Gerwen mean? The duel between world number one Luke Humphries and Wright in the round of 16 had already cast its shadow. Wright, known as “Snakebite,” had announced before the tournament that he would “destroy” Humphries and Littler.
The quarter-finals of the Darts World Cup will take place on New Year’s Day. Van Gerwen faces the highly praised Rydz, Peter Wright meets Stephen Bunting. Incidentally, the two opponents can only meet in the final. By then the last word between the two will probably not have been spoken.
