Working for ever better football. This is what Davide Astori wanted to do and this is carried forward by the Association that bears his name six years after his tragic death. If last year the theme was the health of footballers, this time we wanted to focus on the health of the system with a conference entitled “Sustainability and sporting loyalty”. And the main theme of the meeting which took place in the Coni Hall of Honor was that of infrastructure.

“We are the most backward country when it comes to football stadiums – said Sports Minister Andrea Abodi -. But I am used to thinking that negative moments are also moments of opportunity. This is why I spoke of a commissioner for stadiums. We need a method that puts everyone on the same terms in institutional relations and administrative processes. There must be a coordinator of the procedure who has the ability to support. We also need a rule that allows the procedures to be streamlined.” Then he added: “We must be aware of the mistakes made and the first message must start from the football system in its maximum expressions, from the Federation and the League. The expression of these shortcomings are the turnover and the final expression can only be deficient. Let’s put ourselves in a position to have modern infrastructures and not just because we will have the European Championship in 2032.”

After him, Coni number one Giovanni Malagò spoke: “Commissioner for stadiums? I cannot help but recognize that a commissioner is better than this quagmire in which there are dozens of situations that have been going on for 30 years. I am very much in favor, but I want to read very carefully what he can do, who he answers to, who he is, I want to understand if he is a technician or a politician, because in the second case he listens to what the party says”. Then he bitterly underlined: “We have never reached such a low point, but paradoxically we have never been so high in sporting results. When I go around the international world of sport asks me how we did it, because in our own way we have created sporting excellence”.
