QR codes are commonplace, but what do you do when the code is displayed on your smartphone? Both Android and iOS devices offer easy ways to scan QR codes directly from the display.
QR codes in everyday life
QR codes can be found on invoices, menu cards or advertising flyers. They are usually captured with the smartphone camera. It becomes more difficult if a QR code is already displayed on your cell phone, for example from an email or message. In such cases, however, a second device is not necessary.
Scanning on Android devices
According to the official Android website, modern Android smartphones have the “Circle to Search” function. Users hold down the home button (or the navigation button with gesture control) and, if necessary, draw a circle around the QR code. The underlying URL is displayed directly. Alternatively, a screenshot of the code can be scanned in the Google Photos app using Google Lens.
Scanning on iPhones
According to the official Apple website, a similar method is possible on iPhones from model Xs/Xr. After taking a screenshot of the QR code, the photo app’s live text feature automatically recognizes the code. The displayed URL can then be opened in the desired browser.
Practical application
Both systems make it possible to use QR codes quickly and without additional devices. Users can access links or content directly on their own device, which makes dealing with digital codes in everyday life much easier.
