Inflation rate rises to 10.0 percent in September – price increases for clothing and shoes are comparatively moderate

The inflation rate in Germany rose to 10.0 percent in September. This is the result of current figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Thursday. The Wiesbaden statistical authority thus confirmed the forecast published two weeks ago. As a result of the renewed increase, the annual inflation rate has “reached a new high in unified Germany,” said Georg Thiel, President of the Federal Statistical Office, in a statement. Compared to the previous month of August, the consumer price index increased by 1.9 percent.

The prices for clothing and shoes increased comparatively moderately: they increased by 3.4 percent compared to September 2021 and by 4.7 percent compared to the previous month. Developments in other categories were decisive for the new peak in the annual inflation rate: “The main reasons for the high inflation are still enormous price increases for energy products. But we are also increasingly observing price increases for many other goods, especially food,” explained Thiel. In addition, “the expiry of the 9-euro ticket and fuel discount increased the price increase in September 2022”.

Specifically, energy products rose by 43.9 percent compared to the same month last year “as a result of the war and crisis situation”. This was not least due to the price development for light heating oil (+108.4 percent) and natural gas (+95.1 percent). Food prices rose by an average of 18.7 percent. Adjusted for these two categories, the inflation rate in September would have been just 4.6 percent, the Federal Office said.
