HAMBURG (dpa-AFX) – The Hamburg Industry Association (IVH) has warned against rationing of gas supplies to companies. Industrial companies are already doing everything possible “under the considerable pressure of galloping gas prices” to reduce consumption, said IVH boss Matthias Boxberger on Thursday. “Further significant savings could only be achieved if production were curtailed. This would have serious negative consequences for supply chains and the entire economic cycle.”

An interruption in the gas supply for companies “would have catastrophic effects on the manufacturing industry and would inevitably send Germany into recession,” he warned. “Now more than ever, Hamburg as an industrial and business location needs an initiative for security of supply and the review of all location costs.”

The background to this is the declaration of the alarm level of the gas emergency plan by the Federal Ministry of Economics, which was reacting to the reduced Russian gas supplies. Gas is “from now on a scarce commodity in Germany”, Minister Robert Habeck announced. Nevertheless, security of supply is currently guaranteed./fi/DP/ngu
