Industrial production recovers positive rates after growing 0.6% in May

He Industrial Production Index (IPI) it grew 0.6% in May compared to the previous month and returned to positive rates after the significant decrease of 1.9% recorded in April, according to the data corrected for seasonal and calendar effects published this Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In annual rate, Compared to the same month in 2022, industrial production presented a decrease of 0.1% in May (according to the series corrected for seasonal and calendar effects). This rate is 0.9 points higher than that of April, when a decrease of 1% was recorded.

By sectors, capital goods (4.0%), non-durable consumer goods (1.9%) and durable consumer goods (1.3%) presented monthly rates positive. For their part, energy (−2.8%) and intermediate goods (−0.3%) registered negative rates.

In particular, the highest monthly rates are located in the tobacco industry (13.6%), in the manufacture of clothing (7.3%) and in the manufacture of motor vehicles (7.2%). At the other extreme, the branches of coking and oil refining (-3.5%), extraction of anthracite, coal and lignite (-3.3%) and the manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products (-2.7%) stand out.

Annual rate

Compared to the same month of 2022 and in indices adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, the capital goods (7.0%) and non-durable consumer goods (2.3%) sectors present positive annual rates. On the other hand, durable consumer goods (−5.6%), energy (−5.1%) and intermediate goods (−5.0%) registered negative annual rates.

By autonomous communities, Extremadura suffers an annual drop of 16.4% in its industrial production (in the original data series, if corrected for seasonal effects). There were also pronounced decreases in Murcia (-6.2%), Cantabria (-5.4%) and La Rioja (-4.9%). In Catalonia, the original industrial production data is 0.7% lower than that of May 2022.

For its part, industrial production increased in May in the interannual rate in nine autonomous communities and decreased in the remaining eight. The biggest increases were in Castilla y León (+8%), the Canary Islands (+7.3%), Aragón (+5.8%) and Galicia (+5.6%).
