The party presents a plan in the Board Committee on Wednesday to make parents financially responsible for the behavior of their offspring. The liberals respond to the recent figures in the number of attacks in The Hague. “These are shocking. It is now really time to open all the registers,” says Lotte van Basten Batenburg party leader.
The latest figures sent by Mayor Jan van Zanen to the city council shows that 103 attacks with explosives were committed in 2024 in the Hofstad. An almost doubling compared to the previous year.
Haagse VVD: ‘Disturbing’
The VVD finds it particularly disturbing that the police analysis show that many of the perpetrators are young boys. “It is about half of the arrested suspects. We wonder, just like I think many people, where the parents are in this story,” says Van Basten Batenburg.
“The imposition of an order subject to a penalty is an instrument that the mayor could use. With this we can also give the parents more responsibility to prevent recurrence in addition to having the damage paid.”
The young people are often recruited by criminals and lured with fast money. It is striking that they also live in the Hague region.
Explosion wave The Hague
The explosion wave is the subject of debate on Wednesday in the Board Committee of the Municipality of The Hague. The Hague is in the national top three of cities with the most explosions, after Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In 2024, a total of 1543 attacks with explosives, or attempts to do so, were committed throughout the Netherlands.

Van Zanen points out in his letter to the need for prevention, early signaling and cooperation with schools and youth agents. The VVD also wants to go one step further with the introduction of the penalty.
Local strength
In the meantime, The Hague continues to work within the national ‘offensive against explosions’, but it is signaling that the tide has not yet turned. The VVD is also happy with the introduction of the national Task Force, but wants more strength locally. “As long as young perpetrators can hardly be touched, you have to look at who you can touch. And those are often the parents,” the party says.

The attacks in the royal city cannot all be returned to the criminal circuit. This is true in 35 percent of the Hague cases. In 20 percent it is a conflict in the relational atmosphere.
The wheat camp is a dramatic example of this, which took place last year. In 5 percent it is a business conflict, while in 35 percent of the cases a motive was not received by the police.
Hart voor The Hague also comes with a ten -point plan against the increasing violent attacks.
