Despite the best occasions, VfB is going empty -handed in Switzerland. Several former Bundesliga professionals in the ranks of the FCB ensure the defeat of the Stuttgart.

VfB Stuttgart suffered a damper on the 2nd matchday of the Europa League and collected its first defeat. The Swabians lost 0-2 at the Swiss Doubles winner FC Basel.

The atmosphere in St. Jakob-Park, sold out with 33,650 spectators, was heated, especially in the guest block, plenty of pyrotechnics was burned down. And the VfB caught a catastrophic start.

After only three minutes, the team of coach Sebastian Hoeneß was behind. Basel’s Albian Ajeti took up a fatal bad pass from Stuttgart’s Lorenz Assignon, saved the calm from VfB goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and pushed in.

The Stuttgart residents bought, but had to be careful with counterattacks of the hosts. After 18 minutes, Jeremy Agbonifo could have increased for Basel, but his low shot landed on the right post.

VfB captain Ermedin Demirović awarded the great chance to compensate for a foul elf. After a long waiting time, the attacker failed because of a Var check to Basel goalkeeper Marwin Hitz (36th). VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle was annoyed that Demirović had to wait a long time for a Var check. The process was “wrong”, he said at RTL.

As a result, Hitz, the former BVB goalkeeper, who also ran in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg and Freiburg. First he parried a header from Chema Andrés (51st), later the 38-year-old thwarted another big chance from Tiago Tomás (81st). Six minutes before the end, the former Bochumer Moritz Broschinski headed to the decision in favor of the Swiss (84th) after a flank from ex-Munich Xherdan Shaqiri.

Both teams are three points after two game days of the league. Last week, Basel, trained by the former master player Ludovic Magnin, lost 1-2 at SC Freiburg. Stuttgart won his home game against Celta Vigo 2-1.
