Streaming services offer an almost endless number of series and movies to watch, some of which instantly rise to global phenomena. As the program becomes a hit, its effects will quickly begin to show on the real life side as well.

The phenomenon has been around for a long time, and we have now brought together the fads that spawned the hit programs over four different decades.

Squid Game

Netflix’s Korean series Squid Game quickly rose to global popularity last fall and the series spawned several side effects among fans. Around Halloween, Squid Game boosted sales of Vans brand white slip-on classic shoes. Variety reports that shoe sales increased by as much as 7,800 percent with the hit series.

Squid Game has also caused concern in schools and among parents. The series initially sees children’s games that look innocent, but quickly turn into a brutal struggle for survival. The BBC recently reported how several schools in England and the US warned parents about the hit series. Among others, a primary school in Lincoln was reported that even 6-year-olds had watched the series and copied scenes from it in their games.

Tubettaja MrBeast in turn, got excited about the Korean series by deciding to create their own version of Squid Game for their YouTube channel. MrBeast called together 456 unknown players to compete in familiar games from the series and promised the winner a hefty sum of money. However, the loser’s version of the losers doesn’t go as awkwardly as in the hit series, with each participant receiving a small monetary reward for participating in the making of the video.

Joker

Inaugurated in 2019 Jokershortly after its release, the film caused a sometimes trendy but also dangerous side effect. Namely, the film made people crowd the famous stairs of the Bronx for a picture to be published on social media.

Towards the end of the film, the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) dances down the long stairs in disguise, and the same scene is also recorded on the film’s poster. Those stairs are actually located in the Bronx in New York, and the local population soon shared concerns about the safety of movie tourists, as crime rates in the neighborhood were the highest in the entire state at the time.

No wonder the side effect was widespread among fans, as the Joker was a real box office magnet in its release year. The film raised $ 96.2 million, or nearly $ 85 million, in ticket revenue in the United States during its opening weekend.

Frendit

The Frendit series, which began in 1994, introduced a beloved group of friends, whose audiences were allowed to be watched by the audience for a total of ten production seasons. With the trend, one of the most copied hairstyles of its time, the so-called Rachel hair, also became popular.

The classic hairstyle of actress Renn Green, the role of actress Jennifer Aniston, remained a long haul, although the size and tone of the curls always varied slightly during the production seasons.

The hairstyle familiar from the Frendit series still charms, as with the return period Friends: The Reunion released last year, Rachel’s hair became a trend again – this time at TikTok.

Secret lives

Perhaps even the most beloved domestic drama series, Secret Lives, was first seen on television on January 25, 1999. Iltalehti’s photo archive reveals that the stairwell in Oulu’s apartment building at the time saw sticky notes reading the program’s first advertising slogan: “all the neighbors are a bit strange.”

Like Frend, Secret Lives also featured the most popular hair fashion of its time. Saku Salin, played by Jasper Pääkkönen, charmed with a hair style favored by boy bands, where the curlers were combed for the middle class. Also Tuomas Kytömäki the hairstyle, styled in front of the character, Aleksi Salin, was a familiar sight in a street scene at the turn of the millennium.

Harry Potter

JKRowling’s beloved Harry Potter books have also turned into magical movie versions. Just like in books, in movies, witches and wizards competed in a dizzying sport, fluttering.

The game, which is familiar from the world of wizards, can be practiced in real life and even the World Cup will be held in a flick. There are also active enthusiasts in Finland.
