North Holland as a whole, with 46.3 percent, is below the national average (50.3 percent). But at the municipal level there are a number of significant outliers. Such as in Purmerend: most overweight people in North Holland live there. 58.9 percent of Purmerend residents are overweight. This is followed by Den Helder (58 percent) and Enkhuizen (53.8 percent).
Den Helder is a leader in the field of serious overweight, also known as obesity: 21.4 percent of Nieuwediepers suffer from this. It is the only municipality in North Holland where more than 20 percent of the residents are obese.
