★★★ The intention -and above all, the ambition- of adapting a work by Paul Auster is not insignificant. Not inconsiderable is the recreation of an imaginary, post-apocalyptic world, in luxurious black and white. El País… is a film that stands out for all these elements, especially graphics, visuals, to which enormous attention is paid; also because of the script: the story (a young woman searches a dissolving country where not everything that happens is rational for a missing brother) is written carefully, in a balanced way. Perhaps not all performances are at the level of what we can call “production”, but it works. However, what kills here is the neatness, the care that everything is technically “okay”. That creates a problem: we know we’re watching a well-made movie. It is worth, in any case, approaching to spy on this world.
