The Italian republic is blowing out 80 candles today. To celebrate, a military parade passed through the streets of Rome. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella were also present.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and members of her cabinet were present as the parade passed through Via dei Fori Imperiali, a street built by Mussolini that runs from the Colosseum past the Roman Forum to Piazza Venezia. They watched as military and police units and armored vehicles passed by in procession.

In a referendum on June 2, 1946, the Italian people abolished the monarchy and opted for a republic. The elections were the first free elections after Benito Mussolini’s dictatorship, which started in 1922 and ended in 1945. It was also the first time that Italian women were allowed to vote.
