Karsten Buitendam has a real sports heart. He has been running a gym in Palenstein since 2011, three years ago he expanded to Stadshart Zoetermeer with his store Sports boss. “We have just moved within the city center, now we are three times as big as before,” says Karsten proudly. “As a result, our range of articles has become even more extensive.”
Welcome to Sportbaas
“We sell items for almost every sport,” says Karsten. “The winter collection is now back in stores. Consider, for example, thermal clothing that allows you to exercise warmly outside in the winter, but also items for indoor sports, such as indoor hockey or korfball. We also have items that you can use every day, such as comfortable sweatpants or nice shoes.”
“We ensure that we always have the basic products in stock. What is not in the store, we can quickly order. This way we ensure that every Zoetermeer athlete can find what he or she needs here. I am extremely proud of our growth. Our store is full of items, but we have organized it clearly so that everything is easy to find.”

Shopping with a village feeling
The familiar, good atmosphere of Sportbaas has moved to the new location in the passage of Stadshart Zoetermeer. “The team is very customer-oriented and likes to think along with you,” says Karsten. “We are always open to a chat. I notice that we have many regular customers because of this, people enjoy shopping here. We really try to create a village feeling here.”
“The people I hire are all really interested in the customer. There are many adults working here who come from a different field and want to start something new. They are trained internally here and really enjoy doing this work. We also work together with training courses. For example, a blind student who is training to become a retail manager works here. He is very enthusiastic that he, like everyone else, has the opportunity to do so.”
Nice deals
What Karsten enjoys most about his work is selecting and purchasing his products. “People are so happy with our range and prices, I really like that. Customers come across such good deals here that they, so to speak, snatch the items out of your hands to take them home as quickly as possible.”
“We keep an eye on the average prices of the items online; nine times out of ten we are the cheapest. That makes it worthwhile for our customers not to do all their shopping online, but to visit our store. We have an outlet at the top of the store. There you can find even better deals. That’s where our summer collection is now located, so people who are going on a sun holiday soon can now buy swimwear here at an affordable price.”

Getting high-fives
The store is also a popular destination for small sports bosses. “Children who get their sports equipment from here often come by to talk about their sports competitions high fives when they have scored. Photos of children in our sportswear are added here wall of fame to hang. Our mascot Klaas de Sportbaas is also always present in the store for a photo.”
