In book, sound and image: Warm childhood stories from the youth of Wouter Deprez

In his new book, Wouter Deprez talks about people from his youth. “The influence they had on me, why I was confused by them,” Deprez testifies, “or impressed, or why I loved them, or whether I ran away. Little stories that make big feelings in those little boys woke up.”

Warm stories

The book is about the Lingerie Shop in the Ieperstraat of the more than absent-minded Maria. “When she wanted to tell her kids not to come down, she yelled, ‘It’s me!’,” Deprez recalls. “Once, Mariaa was there during Easter mass. We heard the door creak and asked who was there. It was Mariaa who entered the church in all her absent-mindedness and shouted: ‘It’s me!’.”

And so Deprez bundles many anecdotes from that time in his new book. These are all warm stories that can also be heard with an audio guide in Dutch and West Flemish, while you can admire the strong stimulating images in an exhibition in the refectory of St. Peter’s Abbey in Ghent.
