Alderman Rutger Groot Wassink buried as small young dozens of cans with groceries he wrote to the future. To dig it up, you have to go to the Achterhoek. But closer to home, he buried today, together with the children’s mayor, a time capsule in honor of the 750th anniversary of the city. With the capsule, the municipality wants to “record and save the current image of the times for future generations.”
“It’s a year in which a lot happens. It is a cheerful year in particular for Amsterdam,” says Groot Wassink. “I think people think in fifty years: what did those people do with those phone calls. Why does everyone go with a headphone on the street? Or why are all those weird Japanese dolls in fashion? But we’ll see.”
