Impressive: Lorena Wiebes sprints for the third edition in a row to win the Scheldeprijs for women | Sport

Lorena Wiebes has also won the third edition of the Scheldeprijs for women. Just like in 2021 and 2022, the 24-year-old SD Worx rider was the fastest in a bunch sprint. The difference with Charlotte Kool, her former teammate at Team DSM, was minimal. The Italian Chiara Consonni was third.

For Wiebes it was the fourth victory of this season. She previously won a stage in the UAE Tour, the Omloop van het Hageland and the Ronde van Drenthe.

The South Holland woman made grateful use of strong teamwork in Schoten. ,,I had a great lead-out. I still felt Charlotte coming up and I am not a rider who then slams the door”, said Wiebes, wearing the jersey that belongs to her European title.

A leading group of seven riders crossed the finish line in Schoten at the start of the last lap with a lead of 45 seconds. Among the seven was the Dutch Babette van der Wolf. But the sprinter teams in the peloton increased the pace and 9 kilometers before the finish the last remaining escapees were also caught. SD Worx took the lead, as did riders from Fenix-Deceuninck and Team DSM.

Just like in previous years, no one had an answer to Wiebes’ sprint, although this time it was close.
